As a child i loved soap bubbles and my Mum often wondered why her washing-up liquid was empty so fast *grin ... now in fractaling this is one of my favourite styles, so many different ways to present bubbles ... i never get tired of making these and love the transparency and how different gradients bring out different parts of the bubble, just as real soap bubbles in the sunlight all shine and reflect differently. For me they have something magical :-)

Many fractals are abstracts, a lot look like flowers, spirals are very common... but occasionally i have the pleasure of making fun fractals, creatures or defined forms that leave no doubt as to what they represent. If there is one type of fractal that i really enjoy and cant stop doing, its fractals that look like flowers or plants. Its a challenge every time for me to try and get different petals and shapes. So here is a small selection of some of my favorite nature fractals.

Plants of Purity

I named this one "Plants of Purity" because of the colors i used, in color symbolism some of the positive associations to white are light, purity, peace, innocence, cleanliness, simplicity and security, and gold is the color of riches, wealth, extravagance, praise and excellence. For me this fractal is in one way simple looking but also portrays a feeling of warmth and positivity.

Crackled Spiral 4

Crackle is more commonly used to describe a sound but it can also be used to describe glazed pottery or glassware bearing a decorative surface network of fine cracks, and as you can see thats exactly what the variation called crackle does in Apophysis.
By changing the variables (size, power, distortion etc) of this variation you can get many different types of "cracked" looks, here just a few results i have been able to get on a simple spiral.

Experimenting with the new version of Apophysis 3D, using the DOF which gives a fractal more depth by softening and blurring some parts. Im happy with the result even if i haven't quite figured it out totally yet.

Enchanted Garden

I named this one Enchanted Garden because it looks like a place where fairies and elves might like to dwell on a wintery moonlit night. The cool glowing colors add a mysterious aura, a gradient that worked very well with this image.

Champagne and Fireworks

A Fractal a Day keeps the doctor away...well it does for me lol, so this year im going to try and post at least one fractal a day, sometimes i render more than one but i will pick the one i think is my personal best of the day.... For today my personal "masterpiece" from 2008 is called Champagne and Fireworks...it took me nearly a month on and off to make it, i made it from scratch, carefully placing each transform to shape the champagne glas i was determined to get.
So heres wishing everyone a bubbly, healthy and prosperous Happy New Year!

Today i want to show a type of fractal called Gnarl.

Noun
Singular - gnarl
Plural - gnarls

1. a knot in wood; a large or hard knot, or a protuberance with twisted grain, on a tree.
2. something resembling a knot in wood, such as in stone or limbs.

Verb
Infinitive - to gnarl
Third person singular - gnarls
Simple past - gnarled
Past participle - gnarled
Present participle - gnarling

1. (transitive) to knot or twist something
2. (intransitive) to snarl or growl; to gnar

but in mathematics, and also in Fractals it means:-
The average value of the magnitude squared of the curl of a vector field over a continuous path that is tangent to the vector field at every point. In mathematical notation, gnarl is represented by the lowercase Greek letter ξ.

Or to put it simply, twisted, knotted, deformed.

For those of you who don't know:-

FRACTAL –noun Mathematics, Physics.
a geometrical or physical structure having an irregular or fragmented shape at all scales of measurement between a greatest and smallest scale such that certain mathematical or physical properties of the structure, as the perimeter of a curve or the flow rate in a porous medium, behave as if the dimensions of the structure (fractal dimensions) are greater than the spatial dimensions.

FRACTAL- mathematics, graphics
A fractal is a rough or fragmented geometric shape that can be subdivided in parts, each of which is (at least approximately) a smaller copy of the whole. Fractals are generally self-similar (bits look like the whole) and independent of scale (they look similar, no matter how close you zoom in).

Many mathematical structures are fractals; e.g. Sierpinski triangle, Koch snowflake, Peano curve, Mandelbrot set and Lorenz attractor. Fractals also describe many real-world objects that do not have simple geometric shapes, such as clouds, mountains, turbulence, and coastlines.
Benoit Mandelbrot, the discoverer of the Mandelbrot set, coined the term "fractal" in 1975 from the Latin fractus or "to break".
